I saw these passages and got a bit confused.
Luke 6:27-36 New International Version (NIV)
Love for Enemies
27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
2 Thessalonians 3:6-10 New International Version (NIV)
Warning Against Idleness
6 In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, we command you, brothers and sisters, to keep away from every believer who is idle and disruptive and does not live according to the teaching[a] you received from us. 7 For you yourselves know how you ought to follow our example. We were not idle when we were with you, 8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it. On the contrary, we worked night and day, laboring and toiling so that we would not be a burden to any of you. 9 We did this, not because we do not have the right to such help, but in order to offer ourselves as a model for you to imitate. 10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: “The one who is unwilling to work shall not eat.”
I have highlighted in bold in the above verses the part of the scripture that had me confused. I thought for a bit that they may have contradicted each other, but I took them out of context. That is what people do a lot. They take part of the Bible verse and not the surrounding verses or even the entire verse to get a true understanding of what is meant. Because of this, we often misinterpret and misunderstand what God means.
In Luke 6:30, it is talking about our enemies and how we should treat them. It is not specifically talking about giving them what they want, but that which they need most. This is also true in 2 Thessalonians 3:10. In Luke 6:30, it may be love while in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 it may be food temporarily and employment in the long run.
God does not always give us what we want and He does not expect us to give others what they want, but rather what they need. In order for us to understand their needs, we must be in a relationship with God so we can clearly hear what He is saying. Sometimes, God may be trying to teach a person something and we may interfere with that lesson by misinterpreting this passage and giving them something they want versus what they really need.
