I have been having this thought for a while, why are people disobedient towards God? There are lots of scriptures in the Bible where it talks about disobedience especially with the people of Israel. Even though they were and still are His chosen people, they are still disobedient and he punishes them for their actions. So why would we who are adopted under Abraham think he would treat us any differently?
Back to the original question of why we are disobedient to God.
Romans 7:15-20New International Version (NIV)
15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[a] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.
We use the excuse that it is the desires of the flesh or Satan has made me do it, but I am not sure that is 100% the case. Of course there are those elements, but once I know the consequences for my actions, why do I keep doing it. Am I rebelling against God? Am I afraid to give up my so called control? Because we think those things of the flesh are more desirable and pleasing than the will of the Lord? Whatever the reason, just remember you do have free will, but if you choose to go down the path of I will do what I want, when I want, how I want, and where I want, then there will be a consequence.
Turning everything over to the Lord, and He knows that I have not mastered that yet, is not an easy task. However I as well as you need to get in alignment with what the Lord has planned for us. So how do you do it. I say start by acknowledging before the Lord that you have sinned against him. Then analyze your life to see where you are obedient and where you are disobedient. Ask the Lord to help you with those areas where you are disobedient and give Him praise in those areas where you are. Is it better to stop all at once, of course, but that might not be easy and having a plan to achieve this goal might be a good step. So start and give up one at a time, but you must use your will to do so. You also may need to seek deliverance for those really difficult disobedient areas, but first try to determine if it is discipline before deciding it is spiritual. Use the name of Christ to help you. It is a powerful name.
I pray that you will pray for me as I pray for you to let the Lord be sovereign over our lives. We will ultimately be happier and at peace by being obedient to God.
God bless you.
