Worrying

Recently, there was a discussion in my group about worrying and how should one overcome this situation.  A young lady found herself worrying more frequently and asked people in the group what she should do.  She said she would pray to God and actually go for a run and she would be feel well for a while, but it would eventually come back.

I believe that worrying is a natural human response otherwise it would not be mentioned in the Bible at least in 50+ different verses.  Even though it is natural I do not believe that God wants us to let it control our lives.  Worrying can lead to physical illness, it can reduce your productivity, it can cause us to mistreat people, and it can interfere with or relationship with God.

I am reminded of the Bible verses below when people that are Christian begin to worry.

Matthew 6:25-34 New International Version (NIV)

Do Not Worry

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Back to the young lady.  We all gave opinions, but they are just that.  In the end I basically said she was on the right path in praying to God and putting her trust in Him.  If you are a Christian and start to worry, think about the above Bible verses and turn to God for help.

If you are a non-Christian and have anxiety and have tried everything else and nothing seems to be working, take a leap of faith and turn to the Lord.  Do so with an open mind and put 100% trust in the Lord.  It could be the start of a beautiful relationship that will lead to your salvation.
