Spirit of Fear

2 Timothy 1:7 English Standard Version (ESV)

for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

But what is the Spirit of Fear?  This is a Spirit that makes us turn away from God, not trust in God, that Gods way is not the only or right way, that makes not believe that God sent His son Jesus Christ to die for our sins, that there is no possibility of salvation, that there is no God, that we should put our needs above those of others, and that when we die that is it.  Where does this come from?

There is only one that can spread so many lies, so much distrust, so much selfishness, and so much hate and that is Satan.  People still do not understand that while God loves us, He gave control of the Earth to Satan for a period of time.

Why do we believe Satan’s lies?  One simple answer is that man already has these thoughts and Satan just needs a little effort to push them over.

2 Corinthians 10:5 New International Version (NIV)

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Another is that when we look around us, it is so easy to blame someone, but often we blame the wrong person.  We are blaming God for our own actions.  We have the power to turn from Satan, but in doing so, you must go somewhere and where will that be?  If you do not turn towards God, then it is like you did a complete circle and ended up back where you started.

James 4:7 New International Version (NIV)

Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

You cannot serve two masters, and believe me that we all serve some master.  The question is will you serve God or the other god?

Matthew 6:24 New International Version (NIV)

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Finally, it is mentioned to fear the Lord is start of wisdom.

Proverbs 9:10 New International Version (NIV)

10 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

But what does this really mean?  Does it mean that we should be afraid that God will strike us with a lightning bolt, or open up the earth and swallow us whole, or you name it?  No, that would not really be the actions of a loving God.  This scripture is an understanding that God created each one of us and the universe.  It is accepting that God is Lord over all.  It is deciding to do God’s will because you understand who God is.  Yes God did wipe out almost all the inhabitants of Earth at one time, but read Genesis 5:28 through 10:32.  Man was basically evil all the time.  God had given man free will and this is what he had done with this precious gift. However, God spared Noah and his wife and their 3 sons and their wives.  Where are we today with being evil?

God is patient

2 Peter 3:9 New International Version (NIV)

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

but even He has a limit on His patience.

Romans 2:4-5English Standard Version (ESV)

Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance? But because of your hard and impenitent heart you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath when God’s righteous judgment will be revealed.

If God wanted us all dead we would be, it is that simple, but that has not happened.  He wants each of us to live eternity with Him, but it is our choice.

So the choice is yours, will you continue to believe Satan’s lies or will you open your eyes, ears, brain, and heart to see, hear, and know Satan for what he really is and turn towards God and get rid of the Spirit of Fear?
