God has told us not to go into debt, but He did not forbid it. His reasoning is that when we are in debt we are slaves to the person to whom the debt is owed and we are typically more focused on paying off that debt and will therefore have a false idol. However, if you do go into debt, then you are urged to pay off the debt as soon as possible.
So many of us go into debt to buy the things that we really do not need. We spend way too much at Christmas on gifts. We eat out way too often. We buy expensive cars. We buy big houses. We travel to places that cost a small fortune. All of this is to keep up with the so called “Jones’s”.
People who are not rich want to live like the rich and I am not sure why. These people have a tendency to live way outside their means and in times of trouble often fail because their debt is so great they cannot make payments.
Romans 13:8 New International Version (NIV)
Love Fulfills the Law
8 Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.
Are you in debt? Why? Do you want to get out of debt? I pray they answer is yes. No matter the reason why you are in debt, if you want to get out of debt then you need to seek God and the wisdom He provides. I can only urge you to pray and find a way to make larger payments on your debt. Put off self satisfaction and gratification until your debt is paid off. I know this can be hard especially for someone like me who has a lot of hobbies and is older.
