Love Does Not Dishonor Others

What does this mean?

Dishonor according to the online Free Dictionary, dishonor means:

  • Loss of respect or reputation
  • To bring shame or disgrace upon
  • To treat in a disrespectful or demeaning manner

Lets look at what honor means. According to Oxford online dictionary, it means to regard with great respect or knowing and doing what is morally right.

So love does not bring shame, disgrace, demeaning, or disrespect to other because love is not humiliating or inappropriate. So lets flip that around, love honors others or love regards others with great respect and does what is morally right.

We can dishonor others by how we act, by what we say, by how we say something, by our appearance, by the way we handle ourselves, and by our attitudes

Some things are learned from parents and others that are very important in our lives, somethings we learn from our peers, and somethings we learn on our own from the world around us.

My father acts very inappropriate in public when he gets mad, to the point where it is embarrassing and all you want to do is go bury your head in sand. I know that I have acted this way towards my family from time to time. So here is the question, does that show honor or dishonor towards the ones I love? Hint, it brings shame, disgrace, disrespect to my family.

I could go on with other examples, but I am not sure that is necessary. This topic is hard to grasp because we do not think we are dishonoring the one we love when we actually are.

I urge you to take the time to evaluate your life and how you act. Using this as a guideline only and doing more research on your own, answer this one question: Do I dishonor the ones I love?

I will venture to say we all do at one point in time or another. The real issue is when you do it all the time. Now no time is okay, but to constantly dishonor those you love is not love, but rather it is selfishness on your part.

As always, when you struggle with something, take it to God in prayer.
