The death of George Floyd by a police officer has caused an outrage across America as it should. This has led certain individuals to take advantage of the situation to riot and loot.
I do not have all the facts, but the video evidence is pretty damning. By all accounts, it looks like the police officer killed him for no reason. While I agree that something has to change, the current course of action that some are taking to cause mayhem and destruction is not the answer.
So what should be done? God provided us the answer on how to handle this situation:
Matthew 5:43-47 English Standard Version (ESV)
Love Your Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?
The course of action that God wants you to take is not easy. But look at it this way, even though it seems like the police have an issue with the black community, it is nothing compared to other countries. I am not saying we should ignore this because the suffering in other countries may be greater, but I am saying in those other countries, they follow the above verse.
In other countries, where they are being persecuted, they take the word of God to be literal. There is no grey zone to be interpreted. God said do this so that is what they do.
So I am urging you to stop hurting your fellow man and take your anger to God through prayer. If you see others rioting and looting, report them to the police or stop them until the police arrive to arrest them.
I know that seems counter to what you should do, but also remember this, not all police are bad. I know it may seem that way at times, but the reality is there are far more good police officers than bad. It is just unfortunate that when there is one bad one, we think they are all that way.
I will mention this again, please pray and take your anger to God. God loves you, end of discussion. That does not mean bad things will not happen to you. Just look at Job if you think nothing bad will or should ever happen to you.
