Divorce rates in our country are through the roof, but why?
- Because they married for money
- Because they married to get out their homes
- Because they lost who they were
- Because intimacy disappears
- Because their visions of success changed
- Because their finances are not where they think they should be
- Because expectations are not met
- Because priorities changed
- Because interests changed
- Because they cannot cope and resolve conflicts
- Because they fell out of love
I am sure there are other reasons, but did you notice something in all those reasons? It was all for selfish motives.
Marriage is a sacred thing and it is not to be taken lightly, but we seem to think that it is just a piece of paper with no value.
What does God say about marriage?
Mark 10:7-8 New International Version (NIV)
7 ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife,8 and the two will become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two, but one flesh.
If the two become one flesh, then how can a piece of paper that says they are divorced separate them? It cannot. To separate one flesh would require a great deal of surgery, but that is just the physical aspect. They are also joined spiritually and that no surgeon can separate except God. So even though in the eyes of man you may not be married, in the eyes of the Lord you still are.
So the next time before you get married, think about what will happen if? This is not to scare you out of marriage, but rather to take this sacred act more serious. Because in the eyes of the Lord there is only two reasons to be divorced. One is the death of a spouse and the other is if someone commits adultery.
If the Lord is part of your marriage, then the marriage will be that much stronger. The thought of divorce will not enter into the equation. When conflict or what have you arises, you will work to resolve the issues, but you will include God in those resolutions.
