Somethings become habit and when we stop doling them, we feel awful at first, but then quickly get use to not doing those things anymore. I had gotten in the habit of posting on a fairly regular basis except on Sundays, but one thing led to another and before you know it my posts are a little more sporadic.
I exercise and took off last Wednesday and have not exercised at all. I miss it at first, but at the same time I felt a bit relieved that it is something else I have stopped doing. Currently, I am redoing our garden area to secure it as much as possible from rabbits, skunks, chipmunks, other rodents, and deer. It has taken about 4 to 6 weeks to get the garden area to a point where I am happy with the results. Some of you may think I could have done that in a week or less and so could I, but I also built 6 earth boxes, built a gun, worked on my woodworking shop, worked on the cars/trucks, took the kids shooting, visited the parents, cook most of the food, and cleaned the house as much as my wife will let me, :). I pretty much work from around 8 or 9 AM until 7 to 10PM. I do take a few brakes throughout the day just to relax, but they are usually no longer than 30 minutes.
My wife has said that I make her feel ___________ (fill in the blank with a negative word) as I am go, go, go from about 7AM until I go to bed around 11 PM. She has asked me repeatedly where I get my energy from as she is usually wiped out after working at her job for 8+ hours. Before you get the idea that I am stay at home dad, I am not. I am just between assignments. I travel a lot for my business and it is good to be home for an extended period of time.
I know that I sort of digressed from the topic a bit, but is there anything that you are currently doing that is basically a habit? Are you doing something because you want to do it, or are you doing it because you have been doing it for so long? Take reading the Bible for example. Are you reading the Bible to become closer to God or are you reading it because you have been reading it everyday and now it is part of your daily ritual?
God wants a personal relationship with you. He does not want to become a daily ritual that you do just because. So seriously, ask yourself why are you doing the things you are doing? I do not want you to stop reading the Bible, but at the same time, I want you to read it for the right reasons.
People say that having something become a habit is a good thing, and to a certain degree I agree, but when it comes to your relationship with Jesus and God, that just does not cut it. Do not make them a habit, but instead enter into a relationship with them and it will change your life forever.
