To Serve or be Served

Do you think you should serve or be served by others?  You really need to ask yourself this question because so many people actually have it wrong.

When Jesus came what was it he said?

Mark 10:45 New International Version (NIV)

45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

In other words, Jesus came to serve the people and that is exactly what He did when He gave His life for us.

So I ask again should you serve or be served by others?  The answer is all of us need to learn to serve.  Sometimes it is very easy, but other times it can be very challenging especially when it comes to a person that is hateful or thinks they are better than everyone else.  However, remember why you are doing this, it is not for them, but for Christ and God.

If you are thinking yeah that was easy for them then compared to now, well then read the whole story:

Mark 10:35-45 New International Version (NIV)

The Request of James and John

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”

38 “You don’t know what you are asking,” Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”

39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

You see, even 2000 years ago people were thinking of themselves and wanting to be served versus serving those around them.  So there is nothing new in over at least 2000 years, but somehow we think our situation in this era is completely new.  When you serve others, you show them love and that is part of being a Christian.  Also, you will feel good when you serve others

If you are struggling with thinking that people need to serve you, I urge you to pray to God to ask Him for help.  Remember He might not give an immediate answer, so do not get discouraged.  He will answer but in His time.
