Your Body is a Temple

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 New International Version (NIV)

19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

I have not felt well since Saturday and think I needed a lot of sleep.  Even though I was sleeping 6+ hours per night, it has not felt like a good nights rest in some time.  I also lift fairly heavy weights 3 times per week.  Combined with the lack of rest and heavy weights I think my body was just becoming worn out.  I wanted to lift today, but thought it better to hold off until tomorrow or just forgo today’s routine. We will see how I feel tomorrow.  However, during this time I got some inspiration on treating your body as a temple.

What does it mean when you read the above scripture?  To me it means a lot of things such as spending time with the Lord through scripture and prayer, do not eat too much, do not wear extravagant clothes or jewelry, take care of your body when sick, exercise, take in through your 5 senses wholesome and good things, and to keep yourself clean.

A lot of American Christians seem to be gluttonous in almost everything they do.  They either eat way too much food or drink way too much, watch way too much TV or movies that affect their judgement, exercise excessively, wear ridiculously expensive clothes or jewelry,  buy super expensive cars, and are on the go all the time at the expense of their health.  However, there are a few areas where they should be giving excessively, but are not.  Such as: time with the Lord in scripture and prayer, full filling the Great Commission, and giving money to their church.

As a Christian, you represent Christ in physical form.  Do you not think it wise to keep your body or lifestyle in such a condition that the Lord cannot use whenever He needs too?  That is not to say that God cannot use you for His glory, but it might not be what He had planned for you.

I am not telling you that you have to give up everything you currently do, but I want you to think about what you are doing.  I am asking you do you treat your body as a temple?  God sent His Son to die for us so we may live.  Are you living for the Lord?
