Being too Christian

Today I was speaking to a former client and she was telling me how afraid she was if Pence became president because he was just too conservative.  Then she made a comment about being too Christian.  She is very liberal and is afraid that he would throw us back about 100 years.  I personally am more afraid of Hillary.  In the debate this past week, she never mentioned defending the Constitution, but it was all about what the world wanted and how the world works, not about what is right.  WOW!

I asked her if she was Catholic because I remembered something from an earlier conversation.  She said she was, but she did not agree with their interpretation of being Christian either.  In fact she did not think that most Christians were Christian.

While I agree that a lot of Christians do not act like a Christian, being a Christian is not accepting the world as it is and being part of the world.  God told us what marriage is for example, but we have now twisted that meaning to suit our own needs.  God told us how to live our lives, but we accept whatever is right by man even when it contradicts God.  God sent His Son to provide a path for our salvation yet the world wants us to stop speaking about Him.

She went on to say that if the fanatical Christians get into power she was very worried.  What is a fanatical Christian? Some who loves and acts as Christ did?  Someone who loves God and wants to please God?  Someone who is more afraid of God versus man?  Someone who wants to live the way God told us to live versus mans way?

Somehow she thinks, and I am just guessing, that is Pence becomes President that he will automatically revert us back to the stone age without ever going through Congress. So I asked her about the 2nd Amendment, because I fear that will be the first thing to go.  Her reply was that why do we need semi-automatic weapons?  So I replied with you do know what the 2nd Amendment means? Her reply was so you can defend yourself against an intruder. Well that is not really correct.  The purpose of the 2nd Amendment was to protect our country from foreign invaders and from our own government. It was expanded to include the right to own a gun to defend yourself.

She went on to say that these young people who are getting guns should have never been able to get them.  I asked why? Her reply was that they are mentally ill.  So I asked who was going to make that decision?  If we all have to go to a Psychologist or some counselor to be evaluated to get a gun, then no one will have a gun except criminals and the rich.  If that system were implemented, immediately the system would become corrupt because money would start to exchange hands. Furthermore, the constitution does not say you can have a gun if you pass an exam.

We talked about a few more things, but I was really hung up on her statement about being too Christian. If we all would live our lives as Christ did, this world would be so much better off.  Christ even said there are two commandments, 1) Love the Lord your God with all your heart, mind, and soul and 2) Love your neighbor as yourself. How much simpler can it get than that.  Love is the answer to being too Christian.  So lets start to display some.

Lord I pray you open our hearts to express love as you intended to you and our neighbors.  At times we can get caught up in the moment and what should be love comes out as some emotional response that is anything but love.  Help us to live our lives like Christ did.  Thank you and Amen!
