Dishonesty

Why are people and companies so dishonest these days?

A while back my son took his car in to an automotive whom we thought we could trust.  The job was too look for the cause of some noise.  The mechanic thought that the noise was coming from the transmission.  It was my suspicion as well, but I thought I would let the professionals solve the noise issue.  They changed out the transmission oil and sent him on his way.

Well the noise was still there and now the car is overheating.  I did some tests to see if it was the cylinder head gasket as that was my first thought, but all the tests I did showed the cylinder head was fine.  I talked to the head mechanic and he said to bring it in and they would do a full check.  I did and he indicated that nothing was wrong, but added something to the radiator.  I thought that was odd, but let it go.  Well the problem seems to be getting worse quicker and the coolant additive was something like engine block sealer with copper.

Well not trusting the mechanic at this point, I decided to do a test that I did not really want to do.  It turns out the head gasket has failed as the test shows air is getting by the cylinder head.  Now to be honest, there are two other possibilities: 1) The engine block is cracked. 2) The cylinder head is cracked.

I told you the story, but the question remains, why are people dishonest?  I can only imagine it is for self preservation.  If I tell the truth, it is going to cost me something.  I have no idea what it is going to cost, but it will cost something.

I have always told my kids, it is better to tell me the truth now.  Sure you can lie to me and I may never find out, but if I do, you will get punished much worse than if you had just told me the truth the first time. I have told them that if they tell me truth, it does not mean they will not be punished, but it is less severe.

I believe that God wants us to be honest with ourselves.  He already knows what is in our hearts, but all to often we are deceiving ourselves.  If we can be honest with who we really are, then it might just lead us on a path to have a better relationship with God.  I know that sounds weird, but if we can admit that we are a sinner, then that is a step in the right direction.  We need to admit to God that we need help because we cannot fix the problem ourselves.  The problems arise when we think that we have committed no sins and are better than we really are or we can fix our own problems.
