Broken

Whether we want to admit it or not, all of us are broken. You may have heard that said before, but what does that really mean?

Lets look at the definitions of broken:

  • having undergone or been subjected to fracture
  • not complete or full
  • ruptured; torn; fractured
  • not functioning properly; out of working order
  • suffering emotional pain that is so strong that it changes the way you live, usually as a result of an unpleasant event
  • interrupted or not continuous

Wow! There are a lot of definitions of broken. The ones above come from Merriam-Webster, Dictionary.com, and Cambridge. Do they have a common theme? Yes. Look at the definition of each and see if you can see the pattern.

What this means from a biblical point of view is that we are all sinners, we are all lost, and we are all confused. We think we have it under control, but we do not. We are no longer part of the whole.

God has said He takes weak to shame the strong and the foolish to shame the wise. This is to show us that we are human and need Him more than we need the world.

What does it really mean to be broken? Well to put it simply, it means we are not whole. We are missing something from our lives that has left us incomplete.

When Adam sinned, he basically created this void in us that yearns to be filled. For some they try it with alcohol or drugs or spending or something which we will fill in the blank. However, it is never God because we think we we know better and can do better.

In the end, we are trying to replace what was lost with something/anything. God has given us the answer, but a lot of us reject it because we do not like what God has said. So we end up more broken and more lost than ever.

I cannot stress this enough, take a step back and look at your life. Do you feel lost or hopeless? Do you feel like something is missing from your life? Do you empty with friends and material items? If so, then you are probably broken just like the rest of us and do not realize it.

What I can say is pray and ask God to show you the way? Ask Him to show you the truth about yourself and be prepared for Him to show you the worst. Do not be discouraged by this as some of you will, but instead be encouraged that a loving father is willing to show you the flaws in your life so you have an opportunity to change.
