We are supposed to be good stewards of our bodies which means taking care of ourselves. One way to do that is to eat properly, but how do we do this?
We have the government telling us to what to eat through the food pyramid or food plate. Next we have doctors who do not really try to correct the problem, but rather they prescribe medication to take care of the symptom. Our education system, the ADA, the AHA, and the government are teaching our nutritionists, dieticians, and other healthcare providers the same information the government is putting out there as though this is fact. That information is eat a low fat diet, with lots of whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, but limit your meat and dairy intake.
I say follow the money. The government gets big bucks from agriculture such as whole grains, pharma, and medical devices. Both the ADA and AHA get money from big business, the government, and pharma. A lot of doctors these days get huge kickbacks from pharma. So is it any wonder why Americans are so obese. They have no incentive to change when there is so much money at stake.
You may be wondering why this topic. Well, I just watched a documentary called “Fat Fiction” where our society has been fed the wrong information according to all of those in the documentary. To me they make sense, but that is just my opinion.
When you look at the evidence they present, it really does make a lot of sense, but the study that was shown was limited to a few people who ate one way for a week, then another way for another week. Also, they really did not study the long term effects of eating a high fat low carb diet. So do we really know what will happen if we eat this way for an extended period of time? The answer is no. All that can be sad is you will lose weight and your blood sugar will be much lower, but how healthy you will be overall remains a question.
The low fat diet cam about because the so called expert of the time, Dr Ancel Keys, postulated that saturated fat was the culprit, but his study was flawed because he left out contradictory evidence. I believe he was so convinced from the beginning that saturated fat was the culprit that he ignored other possible contributors such as smoking. At the time a lot of people smoked and tobacco companies were very rich and powerful and they said that smoking does not cause heart disease so he believed them, but evidence has since shown that smoking can increase a persons chance for heart disease.
Ask your self this question, if the current dietary guidelines are so effective, then why are so many people obese, disease ridden, diabetics, have high blood pressure, etc.? Where are the healthy people who follow the governments advice? Those that are unhealthy claim they are following the governments advice, so the experts will tell you that you are not active enough or you are not following the food pyramid correctly or some other excuse.
With all of this being said, God’s word is the best place to get your eating advice. There are many verses and chapters in the Bible that talk about what we should eat. As for me, I will be going back to eating more fat and lower carbs. Yes I will occasionally have pizza, or pasta, or some other whole grain, but those will be limited.
If you are really struggling with your weight and health, do not take someones word for what you should do, but rather do your own research. Look at what the Lord says is okay to eat. Follow the money when you are doing your research. Examine what you are actually eating and how it affects your entire body. Also, pray that God will provide you with the knowledge and wisdom to discern fact from fiction.
