What does love does not envy mean?
Envy according to Merriam-Webster online means: painful or resentful awareness of an advantage enjoyed by another joined with a desire to possess the same advantage
According to Cambridge Dictionary it means:
- to wish that you had a quality or possession that another person has
- the feeling that you wish you had something that someone else has
So what does this kind of love look like? It appreciates and rejoices when others are blessed and does not allow jealousy and resentment to take root. This kind of love rejoices when others are successful.
Envy is one of the reasons we are in the trouble we are in. We want to have what everyone else has. We get mad when others are successful, but we are not.
Looks at celebrities, most people want to be like them. They want the stuff they have, they want the attention, but what they really want is their life because they are not happy with theirs.
Do I envy others, yes but I do not let it run my world. I will flat out tell you that I am jealous of what you have or your success. However, I do not envy celebrities or the rich/famous.
Personally, I think controlling envy is the most difficult. We always want what others have and sometimes we will do whatever it takes to get it. In other words we let the flesh control us and drive us to do things that we would not normally do.
If you suffer from envy, I strongly urge you to take this to God immediately. Acknowledge your faults before Him even though He already knows what they are. Ask Him for help and be sincere about your request.
