There are several definitions to self-discipline, but the ones that I am focusing on are:
- Train oneself to do something in a controlled and habitual way.
- The ability to control one’s feelings and overcome one’s weaknesses.
With resolutions or changes, one needs self-0discipline in order to keep them. It does not matter whether it is inward or outward focused.
I will tell you that at times it is very difficult to be disciplined. Take food for example. If you want to lose weight, then changes need to be made, but those changes can be difficult to maintain. This is were discipline comes in, but lets face it, there are just so many good things to eat especially at this time of the year. You have ice cream, chips, dip, candies, rolls, and potentially other leftovers from the holidays. Did I make you hungry? Did I make you want to go get something to eat? Did I make you want to forget your diet?
It can be just as difficult if not more so when you want to have a relationship with God. Not only is the world against you, but also so is the Devil. Then we have our own flesh to contend with which will definitely lead us astray. This requires discipline on our part.
Does this mean that we need to do it all on our own? Absolutely not since that is impossible. We need to do our part and let God do His part, but do not expect God to do it all.
Are you struggling with discipline? Are you wanting a relationship with God? All I can say is choose. I urge you to pray and ask God for help before you choose and make the wrong decision, but that choice is yours also.
