Winning at all costs

What are we teaching our children these days about winning?  Do I think winning is important, yes, but how you get there is just as important.

As a College Grad, I learned from my advisor that it is not about integrity, but more about lying, cheating, stealing, doing whatever is necessary to get that money.  I realize he had to be creative, but he was supposedly a Christian.  To act that way to get what he wanted now just seems to be so contradicting.

I think of all the TV shows that are on these days, the worst are the so called reality TV types.  Take Survivor, in that show we are teaching our children and the rest of the world what we are and what we are willing to do to win.  Then we have other shows that shows if we act immature enough, we will get what we want.  People in other countries actually think this is how Americans act.  They were amazed when I told them that is not real.

Then we have our politicians who represent how America is operated and whom some of our children look up too. What a bunch of sad excuses for role models, they lie, they take bribes, they cheat, they steal, they abuse their authority, and they are self seeking. However, we still vote them in expecting I do not know what.

Then there are the sports our children play. As a coach my goal was to educate them on how to play the game the way it is supposed to be played.  I was never so mad as when my son got both hands hurt because the player on the other team bent the fingers on both his hands all the way back.  I went into protection mode and the bear in me came out.  I wanted to run over to the other side and just rip the coaches apart for teaching their boys to play dirty to win.  There were cooler heads on our side and in the end we prevailed, but I told them what I thought after the game.

As a Christian, one of the goals is to win souls for Christ.  Do you really think that He would want us to win souls for Him at any cost?  To this I say it depends on the cost.  Christ laid down His life so we may live, but He did not lie, cheat, or steal.  He simply spoke the truth and would repeatedly say something the effect of “Whoever has ears, let them hear.”
