Honestly tonight, I am having a hard time writing. First I started to write about faith, then about violence, then about Satan, and now about dishonesty.
Luke 16:10 New International Version (NIV)
10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much.
I was reading a devotional about this very subject and it made me think.
In the devotional, the author was talking about leaders, mostly politicians and how we say that their personal lives should not matter. The author quotes Luke 6:10 in saying that when a leader is dishonest in the things that we cannot see, ie the little things, then that leader will be dishonest with the bigger things. If you look at country and world leaders, this is very true.
I am as guilty of this as anyone. I remember when Bill Clinton was President and he cheated on his wife with Monica Lewinsky. I thought to myself at the time why should it matter what he does with his private life, he is a good President. He was able to get us out of debt and actually have a surplus of cash. However, was he really a good President? In looking back, I would have to say no.
Clinton like so many other politicians lied and was dishonest with the little things in his life where we could not see what was going on. What was he like with the big things? He was charged with perjury and obstruction of justice and was impeached.
While this focused on our leaders like politicians, it is also applicable to us. What do you do when no one is watching? Are you dishonest with the little things in your life? If yes, then what about the big things in your life? I will bet that you are dishonest with those as well.
Do you cheat on your taxes? Do you cheat on your spouse? Do you steal? Do you lie about how much money you make? Do you lie about things you have done in your life? Do you lie to your spouse/family?
If you think that being dishonest with the little things in your life does not affect you, then you are blind. However, the choice is yours. You can continue down the path of being dishonest with both the little and big things or you can pray to God, ask Him for forgiveness, and repent.
