Me, Me, Me

I saw a report today that says Millennials are more concerned about themselves where as the older generation is more concerned with mentoring and helping others.  What has my generation done?

The answer is simple, we have created selfish, self-centered, uncaring people.  I know that may sound harsh, but with us constantly telling them they are the most important person, they are special, validating their feelings, giving trophies to everyone regardless, etc., we have created little monsters.

Lets look at the definition of selfish:
concerned excessively or exclusively with oneself : seeking or concentrating on one’s own advantage, pleasure, or well-being without regard for others

Of course as always that is a broad generalization that is not 100% true.   However, if you look around you it sure seems to be that way.

I am not saying that we have to beat our kids into submission or be hateful towards them or treat them as those they are worthless, but we do not have to go to the other extreme either.  I love my kids and I pray that they know it, but I do not agree with the decisions they have made at times and I let them know it.

You will not destroy your children if you spank their butts or tell them they are wrong or say no.  Children are just that, not little adults to whom you can talk and reason with.  They need to be taught boundaries.

Now I will say most Millennials are pretty dang smart so sit down and talk to them.  Express your concerns.  Remember, you are their parents and/or mentors.  They may surprise you and listen to what you have to say.

Being selfish goes against God as this is not demonstrating love.  Just think if Jesus was selfish and decided He was not going to die on the cross for each of ours sins.  What if God was selfish and left you to be judged under the law and that was the only way to enter Heaven.  I would bet that most of us would fail and end up going to Hell.

Are you selfish?  Are your kids selfish?  I pray that God will show you the path, but it is up to you to see and accept.
